PRAHRAN HOUSE

A series of commissioned wall lights for Prahran House in Melbourne - wall sconces meticulously repaired with Kintsugi gold leaf technique, hand assembled with customised perspex framework.

Due to the unpredictability of firing processes, each sheet of porcelain has variable surface qualities and warping. When porcelain sheets are fired flat, a natural process of contraction in high temperatures during firing processes occurs, making each sheet whimsically unique.

Where the porcelain has broken during firing as a result of the alchemy of heat and water dissipation, Kintsugi repair transforms scars into a golden illumination, while combatting the environmental impacts of wastage.

Porcelain, coloured stains, Perspex, LED, gold leaf.

460mm x 270mm x 40mm.

For Tracton, this act of transformative repair exemplifies the philosophy of the circular economy, rescuing otherwise discarded materials with an approach that not only restores the functionality of the object but celebrates the scars of its history. Each light therefore becomes perfectly unique in its idiosyncrasies, objects that wear its beautiful wounds and in doing so, acquiring the independence to tell the story of its own being.
